Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are among the most widely prescribed drugs to treat gastric acid-related disorders. PPI-induced hypomagnesaemia, a defect in intestinal absorption of Mg2+, can be a severe side effect of chronic PPI use. To restore serum Mg2+ concentrations in PPI-induced hypomagnesaemia patients by dietary supplementation with inulin fibres.

We have previously shown that consumption of modest amounts of Synergy1 (long-chain enriched with oligofructose) significantly increase calcium absorption in girls. The objective of this study was to determine which subject characteristics are associated with this beneficial effect.

Deficiency of oestrogen at menopause decreases intestinal Ca absorption, contributing to a negative Ca balance and bone loss. Mg deficiency has also been associated with bone loss. The purpose of the present investigation was to test the hypothesis that treatment with a spray-dried mixture of chicory oligofructose and long-chain inulin (Synergy1; SYN1) would increase the absorption of both Ca and Mg and alter markers of bone turnover.

This study is aimed at investigating the effect of feeding a soluble or partly soluble ®bre rich-diet on the apparent absorption and balance of calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc in healthy young men, by using a chemical balance technique.Nine healthy young men were given a control diet or the same diet complemented with either inulin (soluble) or sugar beet ®bre (partly soluble) during 28 d periods according to a 3X3 latin square design with three repetitions.

In the present clinical study, the effect of oligofructose-enriched inulin was studied on bone metabolism in girls from 9 to 12 years old, with low habitual calcium intakes, who attended public schools. Two calcium-enriched formulations, supplemented with oligofructose-enriched inulin (test drink) or without (standard drink) were made.
