This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study was conducted to confirm that intake of GCL2505 and inulin (a prebiotic) improve cognitive function (n = 80). Participants consumed test drinks containing 1×10^10 colony-forming units of GCL2505 per 100g and 2.0g of inulin per 100g for 12 weeks. The intervention significantly increased the number of fecal bifidobacteria and affected the levels of several inflammatory markers. These results suggest that intake of GCL2505 and inulin improves cognitive function by improving the intestinal environment and alleviating inflammation.

An Investigation of the Acute Effects of Oligofructose-Enriched Inulin on Subjective Wellbeing, Mood and Cognitive Performance Oligofructose-enriched inulin; Cognition; Memory; Mood

The aim of the present study was to provide initial data on the acute effects of consumption of oligofructose-enriched inulin. The results showed that after consumption of inulin volunteers felt happier, had less indigestion and were less hungry. The most consistent behavioural effects were an improvement of episodic memory (recall and recognition) after consumption of inulin.

The objective of this study is to assess the beneficial effects of a daily supplementation with inulin-type fructans in 2–5 year old constipated children. Results showed that inulin-type fructans supplemented children had softer stools (p=003).

Colorectal cancer is related to diet, lifestyle, physical inactivity, and obesity. The responsible carcinogens cause mutations or enhance cell growth. Inulin-type fructans may counteract the effects via their gut flora-mediated fermentation products in vitro and in vivo. Important products formed by fermentation of inulin-type fructans with human gut flora are short-chain fatty acids. Of these, butyrate and propionate inhibit growth of colon tumor cells and histone deacetylases. Butyrate also causes apoptosis, reduces metastasis in colon cell lines, and protects from genotoxic carcinogens by enhancing expression of enzymes involved in detoxification.
